Tips On Making A Homemade Costume

  • Make sure you have all the necessary tools to make your costume.  Some homemade costumes require special tools like a glue gun or a sewing machine.  You don't want to decide on a homemade costume and buy all the materials, only to realize you can't even make it because you don't have the final tools to construct it.

  • Choose a costume idea that is inexpensive to implement.  Remember, fabric can be very expensive.  Look around the house for scrap fabric, such as bedsheets or clothing that you don't mind cutting up to use for your homemade costume. Do research online to see if you can find patterns to use to cut your costume from the fabric.  You don't want to spend more on making your homemade costume than you would on a store bought costume.

  • Be creative and resourceful.  For instance, if you need glittery heels for a fairy, princess, or angel costume, you could take an old pair of heels and spray paint them silver or a color that would match your costume.  Then, you could cover them in glue, and sprinkle glitter all over them.  You can always go to a secondhand store to find low cost shoes or material.  There are plenty of secondhand party or cocktail dresses (among other clothing) that will be perfect for a homemade costume. 

    Some accessories, like angel wings, can be expensive. However fairy nylon wings are usually only a couple of bucks at Walmart, K-Mart, Target, the Dollar Tree, etc.  You could always buy an inexpensive bag of white craft feathers and glue them onto the inexpensive fairy wings, so that they are fully covered.  Now you have homemade angel wings.  Alternatively, you could use black feathers, and you would have black demon wings for a vampire or demon costume.  Create a list of creative costume ideas that you think would be impressive.  Your homemade costume is sure to be a hit on Halloween, because it is one of a kind!

  • Set aside enough time before Halloween to build your costume.  You should know what you want to be for Halloween by the beginning of October.  You do not want to invest money on materials for your homemade costume, just to have to buy one anyhow because you waited until the last minute to make it.  Take some time to consider how long you think it will take you to build your costume.  

  • Don't stress out if your costume isn't perfect or has imperfections.  You don't want to alter a costume last minute because you could end up ruining it.  Most people will be impressed that you even made a homemade costume, so don't sweat the small stuff.

  • Give yourself a pat on the back.  Creating nice, homemade costumes is a feat.  Not everyone can accomplish what you have accomplished.  You are sure to get many compliments and questions about your journey on creating your homemade costume.  Have fun making your costume, and make it comfortable so you can have fun in it.  After all, that's what Halloween is all about!
